ark sat there, the ghost of Ramsey’s name on his lips, and memories cascading in his mind. When he had seen Ramsey the other night, he hadn’t remembered, but now that he did, seeing Ramsey brought it all back, pain and joy in equal measures. It also hurt to see Ramsey like this. He had always been paler than others, but today he looked even more pallid. There was also the way he’d talked. Ramsey had never been emotional as such, but he had never tried to conceal his feelings either. Except today. Mark could feel it, how tightly controlled he had been when he spoke, even though it was only a few words.

I’m never going to see him again.

Dread washed over Mark at the thought. He was not ready even for his own feelings. His feelings? These were Mathew’s feelings, not his. He didn’t know Ramsey. He was not the one who knew how Ramsey looked and talked. He had a life of which Ramsey had never been a part of and never would be. He had told Horton he didn’t want to have any vampires in his life, and he had meant it, but now he was not certain.

He was afraid. It was not a new revelation. He had recognised the fear when he had first sent that message to Ramsey. If they had to keep vampires out of their heads, they had to be strong enough to fight the demons in their own heads first.

But he was not a hunter, and no matter how well he remembered his past life, he was not that person either. He was Mark Albert, gallery owner, aspiring painter and artist, and he was not ready for a past life and its memories. There was danger in associating with vampires, and he was not equipped to deal with that. There was risk not just to him, or his comfortable lifestyle, but also to his friends. Mary, Dean, Asif, Jo, perhaps even Kayla and Jerry. What about his family? His grandmother who had raised him after his parents’ death? His uncle Tim? His cousins? Mathew had never had a family or friends except other hunters, but that was not the case with Mark. His fear wasn’t all for him, but for them too.

How can I just put everyone at risk?

But at what cost? Ramsey’s too pale face was still too vivid as were his words. What danger was he putting everyone in? That an enemy of Ramsey would
